Via Ferrata Stairs Installed in Norway at 790 Meters

A suspended staircase located 790 meters above the sea bay was opened in the Norwegian village of Loen. The staircase consists of 120 steps and is 40 meters long.

The staircase is designed for climbing a mountain and is part of the Via Ferrata route (railway), where climbers use steel cables and fixed ladders.

In order to climb this staircase, climbers must first go through part of the route to Mount Goven in the village of Loen. During the ascent, special ropes are used for fastening.

“If you decide to look back, you will be amazed by the stunning landscape: a sparkling fjord, majestic mountain peaks, massive cliffs and a narrow gorge next to you,” shares her impressions, Operations Manager of Loen Active, Helge Bjo.

Ascent to the suspended ladder is possible both with a guide and independently, but only with safety equipment. The cost of a guided tour starts from 160 euros for adults and about 145 euros for children over 12 years old.

At the top of Mount Goven, which can be reached by stairs, there is a restaurant and a cable car that allows you to descend to the foot of the mountain.

The creator of the staircase route is Per Helge Bo, who works as a manager at Loen Active, a company specializing in local tourism. He and his colleagues are constantly coming up with new routes through the picturesque nature of Nordfjord, one of the largest fjords in Norway – and the staircase has become part of one of the routes. It is called via ferrata (translated from Italian – “iron path”). This term is used for mountain routes that use steel cables and ladders.

The staircase was built by the Austrian company HZI, and Helge Bo hopes that it will become the main attraction of the current tourist season. You can walk along the trail on your own or with a guide.
