Manufacturer Petzl has announced a recall of certain batches of NOMIC (U021AA00) and ERGONOMIC (U022AA00) ice tools due to a risk of handle failure that could lead to a fall. Immediately stop using any ice tools covered by this recall and contact the manufacturer to arrange a replacement handle.
Note: previous generations of NOMIC ice tools (models U21 and U21 x) and ERGO ice tools (models U22 and U22 x) are not affected by this issue.
Petzl has become aware of several cases of ice tool failure at the handle attachment point. This defect may lead to serious injury or death.
Testing and evaluation of the results made it possible to identify the batches of ice tools that may be affected by this defect. The strength of these tools does not meet Petzl quality standards, especially under intensive use in ice climbing and dry tooling. The failure occurs without warning signs and cannot be detected in advance.
For these reasons, we ask you to immediately stop using the recalled ice tools and follow the instructions below.
Does this recall affect me?
Only NOMIC U021AA00 ice tools manufactured between December 2017 and June 2020 are subject to the recall. Serial numbers from 17 L 0000000 000 to 20 F 9999999 999.
Only ERGONOMIC U022AA00 ice tools manufactured between June 2018 and December 2021 are subject to the recall. Serial numbers from 18 F 0000000 000 to 21 L 9999999 999.
You can enter the serial number on this page to check your tool. If your tool is included in the recall, follow the instructions below.
To receive a replacement, you must send the handle of your ice tool to a Petzl service center before a new one will be shipped to you free of charge.
- Remove the pick and accessories (weights, hammer, adze), as well as the GRIPREST handrest, following the instructions below.
- Keep them until you receive the new handle for reassembly.
