The terrifying moment a historic Escalona Castle in Spain collapsed was captured on video by eyewitnesses, shocking tourists as a cloud of dust and stone debris engulfed the surrounding area.

The incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, March 14, at Escalona Castle in the Spanish city of Toledo. A fortress tower, visible from outside the complex, collapsed. Footage from the scene shows massive stone fragments flying in all directions and crashing down directly in front of stunned tourists.

Parked cars nearby were also hit and damaged by falling debris cascading down from the tower as it collapsed. The video shows thick dust settling around the vehicles. According to preliminary reports, no injuries were recorded.

Screams and shouts can be heard in the footage as witnesses watch the castle walls crumble. People are seen hurriedly leaving the scene, taking children with them.

The castle is a large fortified palace with a church inside, built in the 15th century on the site of an earlier medieval fortress. It played an important role in Spanish history, serving as a strategic stronghold during Castilian conflicts.

Civil Guard officers and local Town Hall officials arrived at the scene, and the area was cordoned off for inspection. It is believed that recent heavy rainfall may have worsened structural weaknesses at the site. Tourist visits to the castle have been temporarily suspended.

Escalona Castle remains a popular attraction in the region. One Tripadvisor review notes that in the 1970s the site was acquired by a private owner, when only part of the facade and walls remained, and was later restored for use as a second home.

Other visitors point out that the castle is in a severely deteriorated condition, though its remaining structures still reflect its former grandeur and strategic location. Some tourists describe it as “a beautiful ruin.”

This is not the first such incident in recent times. In November last year, a medieval tower in central Rome — Torre dei Conti, located near the Colosseum — partially collapsed.

During that incident, one construction worker was seriously injured and another was trapped under the rubble. Eyewitness footage captured the moment of collapse, as the structure was engulfed in dust and people fled the area in panic.

Regional President Francesco Rocca said that one of the injured workers was hospitalized but was not in life-threatening condition. Two others sustained minor injuries and declined hospital treatment.

According to videos shared on social media, the tower experienced at least two collapses. The second occurred while firefighters were carrying out rescue operations using aerial ladders.
